Is divorce seasonal?

There are certain times of year when you may feel like you hear about divorces more often in Illinois. Is this just your imagination or is it possible that divorce is seasonal? According to Live Science, there is some proof that divorce could be seasonal and it is linked to specific times of the year that coincide with periods where families often spend a lot of time together.

The two main times a year when divorce filings seem to be the highest are March and August. One thought is that both of these times fall after times when families are doing activities as a unit. March is right after the holiday season and before the summer season. August is right after the summer season and before the holiday season. It is thought many of these couples likely stayed together through the previous season to either see if things would work out or to wait before putting their families through the divorce process. It may also play into the financial aspect of divorce. Holidays and summer vacations can take a toll on your finances, so you may need a little time to recover and get yourself in the place you need to be in to file for divorce.

While the main study was done in just one state, that information was compared to other states in different areas of the country and the information was the same. So, divorce does appear to follow a seasonal pattern. However, you still can file at any time that you feel is right for your situation. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
